How Search Engine Crawlers Work

Search engines use crawlers, sometimes called bots or spiders, to explore public webpages.

A crawler generally follows three steps:

  1. Discover: It finds a page through links on your website, your website's sitemap, and other sources on your website.

  2. Understand: It reviews the page’s text, images, links, and other information.

  3. Index: The search engine may add the page to its records so it can appear in relevant searches.

How Your Website Communicates With Search Engines

Your Real Geeks website adds what is called "structured data" to each page. Structured data is a set of hidden labels that helps crawlers understand what the page contains.

For Example

A property page may show a three-bedroom home listed for $400,000 in Austin. Structured data labels those details so a crawler can recognize:

  • This is a home for sale.

  • It is located in Austin.

  • The price is $400,000.

  • It has three bedrooms.

Visitors never see structured data, and it does not change how your website looks.

What Information Is Included?

Every page provides crawlers with your:

  • Business Name

  • Logo

  • Phone Number

  • Website Address.

Real Geeks then automatically adds details based on the type of page:

  • Property pages: Address, price, beds and baths, square footage, property type, map location, listing date, and up to five photos

  • Community and content pages: The page’s location within your website, such as Home > Communities > Kailua

  • Blog posts: Headline, description, publish date, updated date, and featured image

  • Agent pages: Agent name, phone number, email address, photo, and company

Sold listings do not include a price. Listings marked as address-hidden by your MLS do not include the street address. Draft blog posts are also excluded.

Structured data only uses information that is already visible on the page.
